Use the Backlog and Plan Milestones

Introduction

This article explains how to populate the Backlog, create and manage milestones (Releases, Sprints), and plan project items in a Scrum structure.

Good to know !

We rely here on a classic Scrum model, with Epics and User Stories distributed across releases and sprints. However, these elements are still trackers, and the Backlog tool can just as easily be used to configure other structures, such as product versions as milestones and requirements as planning items.

Create Epics

An epic is a category that designates a specific problem, such as the safety of a vehicle for example, or an engine problem.

Fill the Backlog: add work to be done

The first step is to add items to the Backlog.

Two types of items can be added to the backlog here, these are the items indicated under "Backlog items".

Here it is possible to add Bugs and User Stories.

To add an item:

  1. Click Button to add an item, indicating functionality for user interaction on a webpage.

  2. Select the item type (User Story or Bug).

  3. Fill in the creative fields.

  4. Save : The item appears immediately in the Backlog.

Useful information

The default template proposed by Tuleap is in English. All fields labels can be changed to French by the project administrator if necessary.

Link a parent: Link a Story to an Epic

User Stories can be attached to an Epic.

To link an existing Story:

  1. Open the Story.

  2. Click Edit this item.

  3. Choose the Epic parent.

Search for an artifact in the references section of a project management tool.

The Epic then appears on the right side of the map.

Remove an item from the Backlog

It is possible to remove an item from the Backlog without deleting it from Tuleap, click on: Button to remove an item from the backlog in a project management tool.

The item then disappears from the Backlog, but it remains accessible in its Tracker.
You can therefore reinstate it at any time.

Practical information

You can also create a Story directly in the tracker and then add it to the Backlog via Actions → Add to Backlog.

Organize and prioritize the Backlog

The Backlog should be sorted from highest to lowest priority.

Use drag and drop to rearrange elements.
Arrows also allow you to send an item to the very top or bottom of the Backlog.

Add sub-items

A Story can be broken down into Tasks.

To add a task from the Backlog, click Interface showing options to add tasks in a project management tool.

If the Story accepts more than one type of child, they will appear in the "Children" list.

Add milestones: schedule releases

Milestones can be found in the right-hand column of the Backlog.

In this template, the "Start Date" and "End Date" fields are mandatory. They allow this information to be displayed on the map.

The initial status is Planned, but it can be changed during creation or editing.

Schedule Stories in a milestone

To schedule an item in a delivery/deadline, simply drag and drop that item into the milestone.
